Susan Simon CNM

Biography

Susan Simon CertifiedNurse Midwife I have had the honor of caring for mothers and babies for more than 30 years. Attending birth is truly being witness to a miracle.  One of the most enduring lessons I have learned in these 30 years, is that birth is a natural process. A healthy mother has the power and wisdom to birth without interference.  Birth when unnecessarily interfered with complicates a natural process beyond our understanding. I believe that pregnancy and birth should involve caring support, monitoring for risk and watchful waiting.  When an intervention is necessary it should be administered with well practiced skill and knowledge that comes from training and experience.

I attended the University of New Mexico graduating with a Masters in Fine Arts. I received my nursing degree from the University of Albuquerque. Finally, attending Frontier School of Midwifery becoming an Advanced Practice Nurse with a certification in midwifery and women’s health. I have worked in diverse clinical and cultural settings. I worked as a newborn intensive care nurse and in high risk OB nurse at University of New Mexico Hospital. I started my midwifery career in Northern NM, caring for women with complicated social, economic, and medical situations. This was a position that I loved and was a time of valued and intense learning. I returned to Albuquerque to apprentice with a home birth practice and provided women’s healthcare in a low-cost clinic. I spent an extended time working for Indian Health Service in Northern Az.  Although this was a hospital practice, I learned much of what I know about natural childbirth in this position. I returned to New Mexico  starting my own practice and attending home births with many of the communities home birth midwives.  Currently I am working I have experience in home birth, hospital birth, birth center birth, vaginal birth after cesarean, perinatal substance abuse treatment, neonatal intensive care, high-risk antepartum, full gynecology, family planning, normal newborns, postpartum, and extensive lactation support. I am trained in both mainstream medical therapies and alternative therapies. I work closely with the interdisciplinary community including acupuncture and chiropractic. I also have a strong professional relationship with obstetricians and perinatologist that are supportive of home birth
